Carla Angus’s new work is a sculptural map of all the networks flowing in and out of the Cathedral: from the telecom transmitters in the steeple to the fungi in the earth below. With resident art project A+E.

About

Conceived as an intimate, conversation space, The Cathedral Body is a response to the myriad networks that thread through and radiate outwards from the cathedral, manifesting as a complex interweaving of line through space.


These networks are both tangible and intangible: inside the cathedral building, endless electrical cables spread vine-like across vertiginous architecture, connecting cellar to bell tower. The bells themselves call to the local community through sound, while the onsite telecoms transmitter connects conversations across the wider city. Worshippers, workers and wanderers add to this constant knitting and re-knotting of communication every day. Underground mycorrhizal networks physically and historically join the cathedral grounds to other green spaces in Edinburgh and metaphorically symbolise the cathedral’s art and ecology programme as it strives to connect people, place and the climate crisis.


The Cathedral Body is a map of these networks, a version of St Mary’s stripped of its stone exoskeleton. A…
