Genesis

A new series of paintings by Edinburgh artist Steven Hood, inspired by the Cathedral’s Paolozzi Window and scientific image-making technology such as the Hubble and James Webb telescopes as well as electromagnetic microscopes.

Steven Hood, artist, says: 'It was Sir Isaac Newton who discovered that prisms could disassemble white light to reveal the colour spectrum and then reassemble back into white light. It is through science and technology - the Hubble and James Webb telescopes as well as electromagnetic microscopes - that we understand more about the complexity and processes of Nature, from the sub-atomic to the cosmic. The images produced by this technology provides the inspiration for these new works in my Genesis series. 'Energy, light, colour, gravity, repetition, chaos, order, destruction, renewal and time are all part of my creative process. These paintings I hope will evoke in the viewer the same sense of wonder I feel about creation at all levels.'

Steven Hood studied drawing and painting at the Edinburgh College of Art (1985-89) and has enjoyed a prestigious career with regular exhibitions at private galleries as well as with the Society of Scottish Artists and the Annual Exhibition, Royal Scottish Academy et al.

This exhibition is free.  Opening hours are 9am-6pm Mon-Sat, and 12-5pm Sunday, throughout August.
