March Update

Thursday 19th February, 2015

Sunday 15 February saw not only the installation of Michael Fuller as an Hon Canon of the Cathedral and the signing of the Diocese’s on-going partnership agreement with the Diocese of Cape Coast, Ghana, but also a presentation to Helen and Bill Brotherton in honour of decades of service to the Tower as Secretary and Captain respectively.  Warm applause marked the congregation’s appreciation of what they have given to the Cathedral in terms of ringing, of training new ringers, and of the on-going maintenance of the bells.  We wish both of them every happiness in their move to Lincolnshire. A plaque honouring what they have given and in recognition of their contribution will be placed in the main spire’s ringing chamber.

The death of Ernie Mathison cast a long shadow.  Ernie was one of our most senior members, a tireless supporter of the Cathedral, a welcoming and warm presence to all our members and visitors.  His Geordie accent (even though his dad hailed from the Isle of Lewis) sang the Cathedral’s praises endlessly.  Ernie was a lovely soul married to an equally lovely Jean to whom and to their family we extend our deepest sympathy.  Choral Evensong on Tuesday 3 March at 5.30pm will also be a service of thanksgiving for Ernie’s life and followed by a Reception in the Resurrection Chapel to which everyone is invited.

Jimmy Gibson has retired as one of our servers after years of committed service.  101% reliable, Jimmy always gave of his best and carried out his duties with great dignity and sincerity.  He has set an inspiring example for all of our younger servers, including his very own granddaughter.

Ivor Guild CBE WS gave so much to me, the Cathedral, the Cathedral’s stonemason workshop, the Diocese and the Province.  This most distinguished Edinburgh lawyer died in Berlin shortly after Christmas and his cremation also took place there. We plan to hold a special service of Choral Evensong to celebrate Ivor’s life in the near future: details will be published as soon as they are available.

February saw the formal opening of our purpose-built, 21st-century stonemasons’ workshop by HRH The Princess Royal. See the website version of the magazine for photographs of this memorable occasion.

With this month’s magazine you should have received the 2015 Stewardship literature.  Giving is a key part of our discipleship.

All the Cathedral asks is that each of us RSVPs.

Christ bestow upon us the spirit of holy discipline that we may deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him this Lent.
