At the Cathedral’s AGM in November I was able to report a healthy increase in giving of over £20,000, and all the Cathedral’s various committees’ and groups’ reports demonstrated the range and vibrancy of all that is going on in and around the Cathedral. Everyone can see that steady progress is still being made on the construction of the new medical centre, work has now started on the complete refurbishment of the Walpole Hall, including WCs, kitchen and disabled access, and literally thousands of bulbs have been planted on the north and south lawns which will all enjoy next spring. Very soon we should see the demolition of the temporary wooden stonemasons’ workshop as the workshop moves into its permanent new home on the south side of the medical centre: this in turn will allow for the new car park to be built. Of course a consequence of all this work that income (usually in the region of £25,000pa) from our car parking and outside use of the Walpole Hall was virtually zero in our accounts to 30 June: this is clearly temporary, and both should be generating income by May.
Congratulations to Katie Bradshaw and Max Carsley on being appointed Head Choristers and to Amy-Felicity Horsey on being appointed Deputy Head Chorister. The top line in the Cathedral is in most fine voice.
Many people tell me that Christmas is “your busy time!” It is, but I am also well aware of just how much how many people do in the Cathedral during Advent to enable us to celebrate the Word made Flesh. We owe stewards and secretaries, musicians and vergers, collators of literally thousands of service sheets, providers of PLV party and crib service mince pies – we owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.
A blessed Christmas to you all.
