In 2007, thanks to generous funding from the Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, the Dunard Fund, the Hope Scott Trust and the Mann Trust, we were able to realise a long-standing dream and purchase a magnificent Steinway concert grand piano. The instrument was specially chosen to be the most appropriate for the acoustic and for its likely uses in teh Cathedral. It was officially inaugurated on 18th August 2007 with a recital by David Wilde, including the premiere of part of the newly-commissioned Sonata by Gabriel Jackson, a composer with a long association with music at the Cathedral. The Steinway has already been put to a wide variety of musical uses. It is especially envisaged that it should be available to be played by the most talented local young people, six of whom gave a recital two days later on 20th August 2007. Several masterclasses for local piano students have been planned for 2008. For details on forthcoming concerts, masterclasses and on booking the Steinway for concerts or rehearsals, please contact the Cathedral Office.
