Music is an integral part of the Cathedral's ministry. The Cathedral Choir sings at all our major services throughout the year. The Cathedral has the only choir in Scotland which sings daily services; it was the first Cathedral choir in Britain to admit girls to sing alongside the boy choristers, and in 2005 admitted the first female alto choral scholar. The Cathedral has a fine 'Father' Willis organ (see detailed specification), and in 2007 acquired a magnificent new Steinway concert grand piano. The Cathedral hosts numerous concerts and musical events throughout the year, and has a busy Festival programme during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe: this includes daily lunchtime recitals each August. For more details about forthcoming concerts and about hiring or performing at St Mary's, please contact the Cathedral Office. Enquiries about performing at the Festival lunchtime recital series should be addressed to the Cathedral Office Contact details for the Master of the Music can be found on the Music Staff page. In the choir's holidays, music is provided either by the Chapter House Singers, who also perform several concerts a year, or by visiting choirs. Enquiries about potential visiting choirs should be made in the first instance to the Cathedral Office. |
