Duncan Ferguson - Master of the Music

Duncan was appointed Organist and Master of the Music in the spring of 2008.

Born in 1981, Duncan went to school in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and spent three years as Organ Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford. At Magdalen he shared the playing and directing of the choir in its daily services, and was involved in several special events. These included accompanying the premiere performance of an oratorio written for the choir by Sir Paul McCartney in the Sheldonian Theatre, recording the soundtrack to the BBC series The Blue Planet, and accompanying the choir on tour to Antigua, Trinidad, and Barbados in 2001. He played for several of the choir’s radio and television appearances, and recordings. In addition to his role at Magdalen, he regularly played the organ with orchestras, and continuo with groups which included the Britten Sinfonia. Between 2002 and 2003 he read for a Master of Studies degree, and was awarded a Distinction for his research into the role of music in worship at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster between 1544 and 1554. Immediately prior to moving to Edinburgh, Duncan was Organ Scholar at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. He worked daily with the cathedral choir, first under John Scott and then Malcolm Archer. In addition to playing and directing many of the regular services, he also performed at major diocesan events and national services. He was Assistant Director of Music at St Michael’s Church, Cornhill, and the Sir George Thalben-Ball Memorial Organ Scholar from 2002 to 2005. His teachers have included Kevin Bowyer and David Goode, and he currently has lessons with Thomas Trotter.
