Excellent progress continues to be maintained on the construction of the medical centre and related works. HRH The Princess Royal saw this for herself last month and was delighted with the transformation that is taking place, especially in regard to the new Workshop facilities, in her role as Visitor of St Mary’s Cathedral Workshop.
A full Cathedral heard (Lord) Melvyn Bragg and others pay tribute to Richard Simon at a Service of Thanksgiving for Richard’s life. A highly successful literary agent, Richard had the singular distinction of being a relative of George Gilbert Scott, the Cathedral’s architect. Typically Richard has generously remembered the Cathedral in his will.
The Cathedral’s AGM takes place on Sunday 24 November following the Cathedral Eucharist. Broadly speaking, the Cathedral’s accounts to 30 June, 2013 are healthy; for example giving is substantially up by a rate well in excess of inflation. Clearly whilst the medical centre is being built, rental income from our car park and from the Walpole Hall is zero (income from both sources the previous year totalled more than £25,000). This will self-correct next year. AGMs always make me pause to give thanks for so many people who give selflessly to the Cathedral in so many ways: one such is Peter Allen whose past, present and future contribution to the Cathedral was recognised at Choral Evensong in October as we celebrated his 50 years as a priest – Deo gratias.
